Who can apply

This page is for cooks and chefs with real kitchen years.

A trade certificate or hotel-management diploma helps, but documented time in a working kitchen is what Australia checks. Your advisor maps yours on the call.

The honest part, up front: chef pay sits below the standard visa's own pay floor (AU$79,499). So the real chef route runs through a regional labour agreement, a DAMA, which sets its own lawful pay floor and its own PR clock. That is not a loophole. It is the route Australia built for regional kitchens. Your region and employer set the exact terms, and your advisor reads you every line before you sign.

What you need
A Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) skills assessment of your kitchen years, plus Competent English (the IELTS 5.0 band). We prepare both with you.
The demand
Australia's own skills body rates chefs in shortage across regional Australia, which is where this route places you. Cooks are rated in shortage nationwide. [V] Occupation Shortage List 2025 · Jobs and Skills Australia

The questions that matter.

I cook in a fast-food chain. Does that count?+

Honestly, no. Fast-food and mass-production kitchens do not meet the visa's own conditions, but restaurant and hotel kitchens do. If your years are in fast food, your advisor will tell you on the call what would close the gap.

How much English do I need?+

The visa asks for Competent English, the IELTS 5.0 band. We train you to it from your mother tongue.

Can my family come?+

Yes. Spouse and children come on the same file from day one, and your spouse can work. One honest detail: an adult family member without basic functional English pays a one-time government surcharge. Your advisor tells you exactly if it applies.

What does it cost?+

The fee depends on the route, and you hear it itemised, line by line, on the call and then in writing. 30% of it falls due only after you have both the job and the visa.

When does PR start?+

After 2 to 3 years working under the agreement, region-dependent. The 186 is the permanent-residency route. This is indicative, never a promise. Your route call maps exactly how long yours takes.
